Mozy Review: Online Storage Review

Company Overview:

Mozy has been around since 2005. Interestingly enough, they started out as a traditional online backup service; copy your entire hard drive and then restore files in the case of a computer disaster. They have since added file syncing and a number of additional cool features. They currently are one of the most trusted online solutions, serving over 3 million personal and 80,000 business customers. Of course, the service uses advanced data encryption and secure storage facilities.

Mozy is one of the easiest online backup and data protection services to actually use. Once the program is downloaded a local client is installed on your computer desktop. From here, you will simply drag and drop whatever files or even entire folders you wish to have backed up. Of course, you are also able to establish your own parameters and schedules, setting the program to run whenever you like. Another great feature is that once your schedule is set, the entire operation runs in the background without any noticeable slow-down in your system.

Be sure to take advantage of what they call the Stash folder. This is a syncing feature where you can basically tell the software which files to automatically sync. This can be done across multiple computers and other devices (another nice feature of the program). Link together laptops, desktops, mobile phones, tablets, and more. Imagine being working on a file at home before going to work and then upon arrival at the office everything is updated to the latest version? This is exactly the purpose of the Stash folder.

The Mozy service works across multiple platforms and offers tons of customization options. This means all of the latest Windows and Mac versions as well as Android and iPhone apps. Set up passwords and permission for file and folder sharing. In the event of a computer disaster, restore your data through the software itself, online, or order an actual CD.

Recommended Storage Plan:

Given the price and features offered, the recommended plan would be the Personal 125GB option. Interestingly enough, new users may want to get started by trying out the free option, which offers 2GB of storage space. Obviously this is not enough space, but it should help anyone who is sitting on the fence and unsure about whether or not to give it a try.

Safety & Security:

All of data is securely encrypted and stored using advanced technology. Mozy actually has offices and server locations around the globe, offering an extra layer of protection. SSL encryption is used to protect all data (along with military grade encryption).

Protecting yourself from the loss of data should be worth at least $10 per month. Just consider the fact that if a hard drive crashed or your system was hacked, it would likely take hours and hours to restore (and you may still have significant losses that cannot be recovered). There is a lot of value in having peace of mind knowing that your files are safe and if there is ever a problem a complete system restore is only a few clicks away.

Customer Support:

The Mozy Home service includes access to their support portal. This means that if there is ever any issue it will be handled. There is a very good knowledgebase and a number of self-help articles along with real video tutorials. Customers also have access to a community forum. Of course, you can always send along an email, which is answered very quickly by a friendly and knowledgeable support staff member. Finally, they also offer live chat with a support technician.

Bottom Line:

Mozy offers a nice range of features and tools, including the ability to schedule your own backups, strong syncing ability across multiple platforms, and excellent security and data encryption. Best of all, you can even try it for free and the paid plans are very reasonable as well.
